Anu Gupta, founding attorney of, began practicing law in New York after receiving her bachelor’s degree from DePaul University (1993) and her law degree from DePaul University College of Law (1996). A first-generation American, Anu was alone when she emigrated from India at age 20, with $20 to her name. Through perseverance and unfaltering determination, she put herself through undergraduate and law school and eventually established what would become one of the nation’s premiere immigration law practices. As part of her initiative to help the immigrant community, Anu designed Rediff‘s (formerly ThinkIndia’s) immigration portal. Her popular column received over 100,000 visits per week. She was also the immigration columnist for India Post, the largest circulated Indian newspaper in the U.S. When time permitted, Anu wrote immigration advice columns for several magazines and industry websites with the aim of helping other get answers to immigration questions. She was featured on KRON 4 local News in San Francisco as an Indian Community Leader discussing immigration rallies, and she was featured in the San Jose Mercury News’ special edition on immigration and the impact of foreign labor influx. In 1999, Anu created while working in Silicon Valley to help fast-growing tech companies meet their hiring needs and immigrating individuals and families move through the process quickly and efficiently. Over the past 20 years, Immigration Desk has filed thousands of visas and green card petitions and advised more than 10,000 families, entrepreneurs and employers on immigration matters. Being an immigrant herself, Anu has lived the same journey our clients are on, so she understands the frustrations, emotions and challenges the immigration process presents. Anu was named a National Advocates Top 100 Attorney in Massachusetts in 2015 and 2016, and a Top 500 Attorney in the world by Who’s Who Legal in the worldwide corporate immigration category.Over the years, she expanded her practice with partnerships in Moscow, Toronto, Manila and New Delhi. These foreign offices were designed to promote immigration from these countries, to grow U.S. investments and to aid our clients who are applying for visas from these posts. Her main office is in Newton MA. She is licensed in Illinois and New York and practices law in all 50 states.
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Every once in a while, we get a case where an individual, family or business feels like they have no legal recourse after hearing nothing but "no" or "there's nothing we can do" or "you have no other options." These cases are the most challenging because of the confusion and ongoing stress for all involved. A boy with sickle cell anemia came to the US with his family for medical treatment, which required a bone marrow transplant with an older brother as the donor. The entire family entered the US on a B1 visa, unfortunately, there were complications that required an extended stay when the hospital made several errors: (1) they only filed an extension for the son, not the entire family; (2) they failed to respond to a CIS request for evidence; and (3) they failed to notify the family when the petition was denied. One of these oversights is stressful enough, but all three put the family in a very challenging situation. Since the 180-day status window had passed, the family had now overstayed in the country and were at risk of being denied entry to the U.S. in the future. Their previous attorney filed an appeal which was rejected due to errors in the submission, and a second motion was denied due to a passed deadline. Since CIS would no longer accept additional documents after the filing, Attorney Gupta called CIS several times to provide clarity surrounding the long list of issues, errors and oversights. Due to Anu's compassion, expertise and persistence, she received clearance to resubmit the already filed Motion to Reopen directly with the CIS director's office, and the motion was accepted. Within two months, the entire family was granted visas, allowing them to focus all of their attention on what was most important: the health of the ailing family member. "There are people you meet who leave such a positive impression that you will always remember them. My wife and I truly will never, ever forget Anu Gupta. She is much more than an attorney she gave legal counsel, yes, but she also provided emotional support, tremendous compassion and words of wisdom while me and my family were dealing with my son's medical condition and subsequent visa issues. After the hospital mismanaged the extension filing of our visas and failed to notify us, we learned that our status was nearly expired. When we tried to file a motion, it was denied because the deadline had passed. I feared that I would have to return home with my son, and the risk of infection was high. We spoke to several attorneys, but none thought our visa issue could be resolved, and they showed very little sensitivity to our personal situation. It was completely different with Anu. When I shared our story, I could see tears forming in her eyes. She cared. She was very professional in explaining what needed to be done, and I was impressed immediately. But I was most surprised by her conviction to do the right thing so my son and family could stay in the U.S. for his treatment. And she did what no one else said could be done: She resubmitted our Motion to Reopen, it was accepted and our visas were extended within two months. When I talked with Anu, I felt like I was talking to my sister - someone who really cared about what I was going through. She has a place in our hearts forever."

How did you build a successful practice?

I believe in ethics, integrity and dedication. My team and I work hard and are willing to take additional time to get a case approved. Most cases can be approved if you fully understand the facts of the case. We are excellent at completing the paperwork and knowing which creative solution works best when the case is not traditional.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

A lawyer should always listen to you, no matter how busy they are, and treat you with respect. A lawyer should also be honest and explain both the case and the costs upfront.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Extremely important. When filing for a work visa, the attorney must understand the industry and the job duties to be able to get the case approved. When filing family based cases, it is important to understand which USCIS office it will go to, how they deal with those cases and how much time it takes so you can advise whether they can leave the US or when they can start work etc.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Generally we screen the case to see if there is something we can do to help the client.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Name and a brief overview of why they need an attorney.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I believe that every client deserves the chance to get his case approved on time and without any additional hassles. If the case is routine, the paperwork should be thorough, if it is tough, it is the attorney's job to find the winning argument.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

My client's faces when other attorneys told them their visas could not get approved and I get them approved.

USCIS Lockbox Delays
On January 8, 2021, the USCIS reported that it is experiencing delays issuing receipts for some applications and petitions filed at a USCIS lockbox facility.
Key Benefits of Hiring a Truck Accident Attorney
As the frequency and severity of motor vehicle accidents continues to increase in the United States, the incidence of truck accidents is on the rise, as well. In fact, trucks are more vulnerable to accidents than other vehicles on the road for many reasons. Every year, more than 5,000 people in the U.S. will die as a result of truck collisions. The number of severe truck accidents and related deaths rises year over year, which has become a significant public safety concern. These types of accidents often involve larger trucks.
What to Do if You Have Been Involved in an Auto Accident
If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident, any injuries that the accident causes may be considered personal injuries under the law. If someone else is at fault for causing the accident, that person may be liable for your injuries and for providing compensation to you. Auto accidents involve legal complexities and require the victim to prove the at-fault driver’s negligence to win a case. As a victim, you must have sufficient evidence that demonstrates the other driver’s fault.
